Thereinto the acrylic and polycarbonate is light transmission quality is the best.  PMMA is better than polycarbonate as well, but the polycarbonate is engineering resin have very good impact performance, PMMA is not. There is transparent ABS and opaque ABS, opaque molding ABS raw material color is light yellow color. Clear ABS molding resin is commonly used for electronic product enclosures and clear plastic bottle cap etc as the ABS resin cost is cheaper than the polycarbonate resin.


Clear PVC is commonly used for the transparent plastic pipe, pipe connector and industry plastic product what request the transparent color, the PVC environmental performance is less than the other resin.


Polypropylene is just the semitransparent plastic resin, it is common used for semitransparent plastic cup. The resin is a little bit softer than the polycarbonate resin.

For the mold manufacturing for clear plastic molding, the core and cavity steel is very important and the transparent quality depends on the steel selection and polishing.


For the high quality clear plastic molding lens and the surface finishing above SPI A3 , you should choose the ASSAB S136 through hardness steel with mirror polishing.  If the mold life is lower than 500,000shots, you can choose the NAK80 as well.


Regarding the clear plastic molding lens equal to SPI A3 and you purchase, you can choose 420, 2083, Formadur 2083 etc.  If it is low volume production, you can choose the prehard steel such as 420H and 2083H.


For the PVC resin, you have to choose the 420 series stainless steel for core and cavity all the time such as 420, 2083 and 2316 etc. Sure you can choose the 420 series prehard steel as well.


Normally the transparent plastic parts mold surface finishing should be above or equal to SPI A3.


What you should pay attention for clear plastic injection mold manufacturing?


No welding all the time for the mirror polishing steel. If you need to weld, you had better to change the steel to remake new core and cavity except for that you do not mind the surface quality.  The reason is that if there is welding on the steel, there will be mark on the clear plastic product. This is one of the important reason why the plastic molds used for clear plastic molding are more expensive.


High polishing for the core and cavity, specify the the polishing for the mold surface finishing for your mold maker as different polishing standard request different steel and polishing, these will affect the mould cost.


Cover the core and cavity after polishing with clean plastic sheet or clear cardboard etc.


Never touch the core and cavity with your dirty fingers even if you think your finger is clean, never do this.


What we should pay attention for clear plastic molding production?


Make sure your mold is clean including the mold base.


Clean the additional oil in the mold otherwise there will be more and more transparent part with this kind of oil. You will feel painful to waste resin and your labor.


Use the clean plastic injection machine to injection the clear plastic part. Never use the injection machine just shot the black parts. The most cost saving solution is to have injection machine just shot the transparent parts, compromise solution is to use the machine just shot the white color. Otherwise you probably face to clean the barrel screw to save resin waste.


Dry the clear plastic resin as per the resin specification to make the moisture out, otherwise you will face the white mark etc. different trouble.


Make sure your injection molding room and working table is clean. Prepare the clean box to storage the clear plastic products. Have the clean plastic sheet to cover the plastic product, please let your plastic sheet supplier know you will use these to cover the clear part and resin type, never use the PVC sheet to cover the plastic lens or high quality transparent parts.


How to clean the high quality clear plastic molding product ?


If it is small spot on the clear product, you just need to have the small toothpick wrapped with 3M adhesive to stick the spot out.


If it is fingerprint, you should use the clearning room wiper fetching aether petrolei to clean the clear plastic molding lens or clear plastic product. Please gently wipe the clear plastic parts from one side to another side, never wipe back and forth.

The plastic injection mold cavity is composed of two half moulds synthesis, also the plastic injection molding products have to be taken out from mold, it much be two half of mold.


With this separated line and separated place, there is a line in plastic injection products, then we called this parting line.


Mold used for plastic injection filling using most of a few parts are spliced, and the joint location may not be absolutely smooth, there will be small gap. In the plastic injection filling production, the position will be small edge protuberance, this called parting line.


There is a simple way to understand.


Plastic parts need to be divided into several parts to be mold, there parts together to form a closed space, so between the various there parts of the line is the parting line.

Although the plastic mould fitting is very precise, but still will leave traces in the plastic parts plastic parts appearance effect, so the parting surface should be avoided in the plastic parts on smooth surface and exterior surface.


Prevent to use the slider or lifter etc.


On the plastic injection mold design, we prevent to use the slider and lifter etc. side core pulling system as possible as it will increase the plastic injection mold cost and injection molding cycle, it will also loose the tolerance.  But if your plastic products need the side pulling core, you should also consider.


Consider plastic injection mold parting line manufacture easier


If you can use the flat parting line, then you do not need to consider to use the curved surface and angular surface due to the curved surface and anglular surface increase the difficulty of injection mold manufacturing processing.


 Make the slider core shorter as possible


The shorter sider pulling core, the less moving distance of the slider or lifter. On the one hand it can reduce the thickness of the core and cavity and the plastic parts dimension deviation; On the other hand it will be propitious to demoulding.

What is plastic injection mold steel?



Plastic injection mold steel is the plastic mould steel used for plastic mold core and cavity and plastic injection mold base.



How to choose plastic injection mold steel for plastic mold base?

In China the default steel used for injection mold base is S5OC, it is similar steel as 1050 and 1055 steel in US and 1.1730 steel in Europe.  Normally for the small quantities plastic injection mold is okay to use this steel. But for the long term production and the mold life more than 1,000,000 shots, we suggest to use P20 steel for the plastic injection mold base. For the long term production mold, you can also choose the 420SS for the mold base as well. We will have more details article to talk more about plastic injection mold base steel in future on our this blog.



How to choose plastic injection mold steel for plastic injection mold core and cavity?









To understand this, we have to understand what will affect the steel selection for plastic mold, this is as following:



  • Plastic resin used for plastic injection molding  


For the corrosive plastic resin, we should choose the 420SS stainless steel for core and cavity. For the plastic resin with fiber glass, we should choose the through hardness steel for injection mold core and cavity to improve the injection mold life and rub attrition, normally we can also choose the rub attrition through hardness steel for the long term production mold and plastic resin with fiber glass mold.  We should understand different plastic resin performance and plastic mould steel performance to define the plastic injection mold steel for core and cavity.



  • Plastic injection mold life


For the injection mold life less than 300,000 shots and plastic resin is not special, we can choose the preharden plastic mold steel for core and cavity. For the mold life more than  300,000 shots and less than 1,000,000 shots, we have to choose the through hardness steel for core and cavity.  For more information for this topic, you can review our post injection mold base and plastic injection mold life.   • Plastic injection molding parts surface finishing


Regarding the high polishing or mirror polishing plastic molding parts,we should choose the 420SS etc. stainless plastic mould steel for core and cavity. For the texture surface, there is not so much limiting factor on plastic mold core and cavity steel. You can also understand this more to read plastic mold steel specification as below.

  • Plastic injection mold size


For the large size plastic injection mold to produce large transport plastic frame, automotive large parts, large plastic basket, large plastic barre and  large plastic garbage can etc. , normally it is to use preharden injection mold steel such as P20, P20+Ni and P20HH.

Normally the core and cavity use the different hardness or use different steel to reduce the friction force, this also apply to the sliders and angle lifters. We may talk this more once we are talking about plastic injection mold design.



  • Plastic injection molding parts tolerance


For the precise plastic injection mold, normally we suggest to use the through hardness steel for the core and cavity, also for the mold base A, B plate as well as ejection plate, we suggest to use P20 or harder steel than S50C. Rubber parts manufacturing process


There are a few process to manufacture rubber parts such as compression molding, injection molding and extrusion etc.  You should choose the reasonable manufacture and qualified manufacturing process based your budget, quality and demand. We will talk about the different manufacturing process first as below.


Rubber compression molding for rubber parts manufacturing

Rubber compression molding normally used to manufacture heat cured plastic resin such as silicone, EPDM and NBR etc. Sure TPU and TPE have the heat cured series type. Rubber compression parts molding is commonly use to make keypad, phone case, automotive key case, rubber gasket and rubber cap etc.


Rubber compression mold normally have no so complex structure as the plastic injection mold, there is no ejection pins as the injection mold. Sure on the compression mold to manufacture the rigid resin such as bakelite, there is ejection pin and ejection plate as the plastic injection mold. Normally there is only top plate with cavity and bottom plate with core for the compression molding mold. Sure we can make the sliders on the compression mold. On the rubber compression molding process, it is to use the hand to take the rubber part out of mold and have to use the hand to remove the flash from the mold as well.  Except for this rubber compression molding have following advantage:


  • Reduce lots of mold cost compare to injection mold, sometimes the compression mold cost is 1/50 of injection mold cost

  • It is easier to make the complex rubber part even if there is big undercut what you think it is not possible to use the injection mold to manufacture, but rubber compression can make that possible.

  • Use the single cavity compression mold to have the rubber prototype made is very good solution to save cost and have the rubber parts as the quality of production.

  • It is easier to have qualified surface finishing, normally you do not worry about lots of defect you faced on injection molding such as flow mark, jetting mark and short shot etc.

  • Designer have more imaginary space to design the rubber parts as the compression molding process can make the thicker parts out even if the wall thickness is not consistence.

  • It is easier to change color by using rubber compression molding, normally there is no additional cost to change colors

  • Easier to have family mold

Rubber injection molding


Rubber injection molding is most like the plastic injection molding. But we should pay more attention to optimize the rubber molded parts ejection system.  Sure the venting system is also very important on injection mold manufacturing. If we can not design a ejection system for the rubber molding mold, then you destroy the ejection system. I Hedy have saw a few guys have the ejection system, but during the production, it is not useful for the ejection.


Rubber compression molding is commonly used to make rubber gasket, rubber end cap, rubber connectors, rubber cap and over molding rubber handle or enclosure parts etc.


If the rubber shore hardness is very low, normally it is not necessary to design the ejection system. So the experience to do the rubber molding production is very important.  I have a few suggestion as below:


  • You had better to use the big ejection pin instead of the small ejection pin, put the ejection pin the area where it is most possible location to ejector the rubber parts out.

  • If it is possible, you had better to use ejector plate with ejector pin. This is to have ejection area for the rubber parts.

  • Use the side gate instead of the sub gate if it is acceptable by your customers. Some of rubber resin is good to use the sub-gate without jetting on the gate, you have to review the resin specification before the mold design.

Before you design or manufacture the rubber injection mold, you have to read the rubber resin specification first. Normally the rubber resin supplier offer the guide for you to design the rubber injection mould.


 Compare the rubber compression molding, what is the advantage of rubber injection molding?


  •  If you have good ejection system, no need to bring the rubber parts from mold with hand, it is possible to have the automatic rubber parts manufacturing.

  • No need to remove the flashes by hand.

Rubber extrusion molding process


Rubber extrusion molding is one of cheap manufacturing to manufacture the rubber tube and rubber gasket etc. For example, your refrigerator door gasket is made by this process.  It is very simple mold to extrude the rubber parts.


There is thermoset and thermoplastic rubber extrusion molding. In South of China, thermoplastic rubber extrusion molding is more than the thermoset rubber extrusion molding
