What will affect the injection mold cost?


  • Plastic product size and concept;  This is one of major factor to affect the injection mold cost as the mold size is depends on the plastic product size and plastic product structure.  For example, plastic product with under need to make mold with slider or  angle lifter will make the mold size bigger and more manufacturing process, and also increase the risky of the mold manufacturing and mold trial.

Corrosive plastic resin such as PVC and POM etc request to have the anti-corrosion steel( stainless steel). Generally, the stainless mold steel is more expensive than the common steel.


The mold life is one of major factor to affect the injection mold cost too, you can review our post”injection mold type” to understand the details, different mold life request different injection mold steel, mold design and manufacturing process.


Why injection mold base type will affect the mold cost? It is very often for US and Europe customer to use the DME or HASCO standard mold base, that request the DME or HASCO standard guide system and mold base price is a little bit more expensive than China standard mold base even if we can custom the guide system in China local mold base supplier. Anyhow there are more and more China mold base supplier are willing to customize the DME and HASCO mold base, this will make the mold cost have less different by using standard or non-stand China mold base.


Why surface finishing of core and cavity affect injection mold cost?  The surface finishing of core cavity is also the surface finishing of plastic molding product such as texture and polishing. For example, if it is transparent plastic product mold, then it request stainless steel (AISI 420 or AISI 420ESR) and mirror polishing for the core and cavity, so there is more steel cost and polishing cost.

Also we can use the different mold temperature to fine tune the warapage, reducing cycle time, gloss surface finishing and shrinkage as well as dimensions. Before the injection molding, we have to read the resin specification to have the suggested mold temperaturer and cycle time to prevent resin degradation. On the transparent polycarbonate injection molding, if the resin is degradated, the plastic parts will have yellow color, this also happen on the other resin, we should be easier to discover this issue on the transparent molding parts.

What is injection mold  venting and why vent?


Mold venting is a process that is used to remove trapped air from the closed injection mold and volatile gas from the processed melting plastic. Without mold venting, the trapped air will compress as plastic tries to force it out of the mold and the air will ignite, burning the surrounding plastic and causing charred areas on the plastic molded part. Trapped air also keeps the plastic from filling in those areas of the mold cavity where the air is trapped so a non-filled (or short) part is molded. Volatile gases will be absorbed by the plastic and will cause voids, blisters, bubbles, and a variety of other defects.

  1.  All of the end of the runner and runner slag have to be vented.

  2. There should be enough venting for cavity; Also there should be venting at the opposite side of the gate, air trapped area and aftermost plastic resin flow.

  3. To lead the venting on core pin and inserts out of injection mold.

  4. Preferentially use grinding machine or EDM machine to manufacture venting.
